That date is considered the birth of the modern environmental movement, which began in 1970, when 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy and sustainable environment.
That day (April 22, 1970) a political coincidence was achieved that seemed impossible; which later made possible the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the approval of an important package of laws related to clean air, clean water and the conservation of endangered species, etc. .
From then on, every year on this date, the whole world reflects and mobilizes for a better Earth.
In 2009, through Resolution No. 63/278, the UN General Assembly designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day to “raise awareness” about the environment.
From then on, the UN General Assembly chooses a theme to reflect on on April 22; proposing for this 2017, the campaign is called: "Environmental and climate literacy"; a great challenge for governments and civil society.
Education is undoubtedly one of the main foundations, where a society establishes its progress and well-being and it is, through this, that the necessary attitudinal changes and socio-cultural transformations can be generated to reverse our actions towards our planetary ecosystem.
Today more than ever the involvement of the entire World Citizens is needed, and in particular ours. Climate change has come to stay, it is necessary to know what this means in order to be aware and measure the threat that it means for planetary sustainability at a social, economic and ecoterritorial level; from which our region does not escape it.
The challenge is to achieve the necessary empowerment, as a society, that produces changes in favor of a healthier and more sustainable environment; strategic to consolidate a National Sustainable Development based on the development of technologies and jobs that respect the environment.
Environmental and climate literacy is the great challenge of these times, this April 22 is the opportunity to kick-start.
